European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen helped a passenger with health problems during a flight on Wednesday afternoon. The incident took place on the way back from the G20 summit between Zurich and Brussels.
When a passenger on Swiss flight LX780 had a medical emergency, staff asked if there was anyone with medical knowledge on board. Then the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who studied medicine and worked for several years as an assistant doctor in gynecology before entering politics (1988 to 1992), got in touch.
Passenger: “Great job”
She helped until she landed, when medical staff took over, a European Commission spokeswoman said. “I’m pretty sure it was Ursula von der Leyen,” a fellow traveler previously told Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten. “I love how she did it.”
According to him, the politician was picked up by a black Mercedes after landing. The airline confirmed the incident upon request, but did not provide information about the people involved or the health status of the affected passenger.
In the event of a medical emergency, it is common for the onboard staff to ask if any of the passengers have medical knowledge. Von der Leyen and her team were on their way back to Brussels from the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro; the flight departed Wednesday at 1:17 p.m.
