The Serb was “lucky”: a wild chase on foot on the Vienna highway

Date:

After a dinner together in Vienna, a married couple picked up a drunk friend to take him home. But the man grabbed the gear lever in the middle of the A23 city highway and wanted to get out. What follows is a cinematic chase with the police on foot along the southeastern ring road.

“We were standing in front of the tunnel. Suddenly he attacked me from the backseat. He then grabbed the gear lever and wanted to get out in the middle of the highway,” the driver reported as a witness at the Vienna Regional Court. Around midnight on July 21, she was able to quickly stop on the right emergency lane in front of the tunnel. “I was in shock,” the driver remembers.

The confused 52-year-old passenger, a truck driver by profession, immediately jumped out of the car. Officers in a passing patrol car became aware of the incident.

They saw the man crossing the road and the oncoming traffic on the southeastern ring road, which was busy despite the late hour. A police officer gave chase and also crossed the road: “We didn’t know what had happened. After a 400-meter foot chase on the highway, the young officer captured the fugitive, who is accused of deliberately endangering the public, resisting state authority and causing serious bodily harm. Because the Serb grabbed the officer’s gun when he was stopped: “Suddenly he grabbed my service weapon,” the police officer remembers.

Carried into the car with four people in ankle bracelets
The Serb continued to offer massive resistance. Why can’t he explain more during the trial? Three other officers ran over. The four of them had to hold the ‘runabout’ on the highway, put an ankle bracelet on him and lift him into the car. The man repeatedly tried to kick the police. Ultimately, he had to spend the night in a specially secured cell.

“You were very lucky that nothing happened,” the judge said. The client of lawyer Wolfgang Haas nods. “I was drunk and just wanted to go home.” Mrs Rat sees an acceptance of responsibility and offers the Serb a diversionary maneuver with a probationary period of two years and a lump sum contribution of 150 euros. “You are clearly very uncomfortable with what happened that night.”
