TikTok will stop working in the United States

Date:

He did this on the eve of Trump’s ascension to the presidency, who stated that he would “probably” grant the platform a 90-day extension to avoid being banned.

The social network TikTok stopped operating in the United States this Saturday, after the Supreme Court on Friday approved a law passed by Congress last year that forced the platform to separate from its parent company, the Chinese company ByteDance, or risk closure.

The application, which has 170 million users in the US, sent many of them a message on their phones saying: “Sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable”, attributing the suspension of operations to legislation passed by Congress is promoted.

However, according to Joe Biden’s administration, TikTok made this decision on its own initiative. After the Supreme Court ruling, the White House announced that the current executive branch would not enforce the law and that enforcement would be in the hands of the new president, Donald Trump, who takes office next Monday.

Just this Saturday in an interview with the NBC network, Trump said he would “probably” grant the platform a 90-day extension to circumvent the ban in the United States.

The TikTok message appeared on users’ devices about an hour and a half before the law took effect, scheduled for Sunday at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time.

When attempting to access the platform, users were notified that the app had been blocked with a message in which the company stated: “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a resolution. Keep following us! NB! “

In practice, the entry into force of the law forces Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their application stores, as well as web hosting companies that collaborate with the platform, such as Oracle and Amazon Web Services, to sever relations with it.

Failure to comply with the rule, which was adopted for national security reasons, carries significant financial penalties: companies that continue to support TikTok could face fines up to $5,000 per userwhich could translate into billions of dollars given the size of the user base in the US.

On Friday evening, TikTok warned that it would be forced to suspend operations next Sunday unless the Biden administration guaranteed it would not impose fines on the companies backing the application.

The legislation, passed in April 2024, gave ByteDans a nine-month period to sell its operations in the United States to a buyer who was not considered an “adversary” of the country and determined that otherwise it would be banned on January 19 on national security grounds.

The Biden administration and lawmakers who promoted the rule consider it essential that TikTok distance itself from ByteDance due to the risk that the Chinese government could gain access Influencing US user data or the country’s public debate.

Faced with these arguments, TikTok assures that it has taken measures to protect the privacy of its users and denies that its platform could be used as a propaganda tool by Beijing.

The ban has also had consequences in addition to TikTok KapCuta popular video editing app owned by ByteDance and used by many creators to generate content on the platform.

Even if Trump decides to reverse the measure, the enactment of this law marks the first time in history that the US has banned a social network at a national level.
