Dozens of operations – gusts of wind kept the Vienna fire brigade busy

Date:

It stormed Friday evening in Vienna. The strong gusts of wind also demanded the forces of the Viennese professional fire brigade. By midnight they had to move almost 300 times. About half of the operations were due to the storm.

Within an hour, the cold front had caused the temperature in the federal capital to drop by ten degrees. A strong storm dispelled the heat and the evening and night in Vienna were relatively cool with temperatures as low as 15 degrees. However, the sometimes strong gusts of wind also increased the number of firefighters. By midnight it had to be deployed 293 times, spokesman Christian Feiler reports. Of these, 140 operations were caused by the violent gusts of wind.

At 8 p.m., the fire service was alerted for increased operational readiness, which lasted until nearly 10 p.m. At that time, two extinguishing groups from the disaster relief service were also deployed.

Scaffolding could not withstand gusts of wind
The troops in Wolfgang-Schmälzl-Gasse in Leopoldstadt worked for hours. A collapsed scaffolding had to be secured for three hours. According to Feiler, it was moved back to its original position with multiple grippers to secure it there.

Also on Saturday there was a strong wind in Vienna, with an almost cloudless sky. With maximums of up to 26 degrees, it will remain a bit cooler than last time. Sunday should be warmer, 30 degrees could be reached. There is a chance of thunderstorms at the start of the new week.
