The trial of the American actor in London is postponed until June 2023
Kevin Spacey has pleaded not guilty to five charges of assault and rape against three men in his first appearance before the British National Criminal Court, better known by the name of the street where it is located, Old Bailey. The award-winning actor, 62, has vigorously reiterated his declaration of innocence before any charges during a brief court hearing, presided over Thursday by Judge Mark Wall, in room number one of the City of London’s historic building. The magistrate has agreed to continue the trial on June 6, 2023 and has reaffirmed the unconditional provisional release the US suspect has enjoyed since his voluntary return to the UK.
Kevin Spacey Fowler is charged with sexually abusing three men and inciting “penetrative sexual activity”. The events allegedly took place on four different dates (March 2005, August 2008 and April 2013) and in different scenarios, according to the indictment published by the UK Public Prosecutor’s Office. The assaults are said to have taken place in London, while the alleged rape took place in an undisclosed location in the west of England.
The actor worked in London in those years. He ran the Old Vid Theater for a decade until 2015, and the following year he was honored with a Knighthood of the British Empire for his services to theatre, the arts and international culture. Shortly thereafter, in the wave of ‘MeToo’, allegations surfaced in the United States of Spacey’s alleged misconduct with young actors. In London, the Old Vic received more than 20 complaints of sexual harassment and workplace harassment from theater staff and three individuals lodged a complaint with the police.
At the first hearing, at Westminster Court last June, the defense said the famous actor “categorically denies” the charges. The lawyer underlined the willingness his client has shown to cooperate with authorities since Scotland Yard reopened the investigation into the alleged crimes in England. The prosecution, in turn, pointed out that the examination of the police evidence led to the decision to press charges against the now humiliated professional.
Spacey will remain under the cloud of suspicion of being a sexual pervert until the outcome of the London trial. In the US, most complaints have been settled through out-of-court settlements, although a civil lawsuit is pending in a federal court in New York. This case was filed by his first accuser, actor Anthony Rapp, who has maintained since 2017 that Spacey intended to sexually abuse him when he was a minor. The three alleged victims in the British case were in their twenties and thirties when they met the then manager of the Old Vic.
