A seven-year-old boy and his older sister were killed during a fireworks display to mark the French National Day in the western French town of Cholet. Poignant videos — like the one you find above — are circulating on social media of the incident. You see people who, when the fireworks get out of hand, first duck and then flee in panic.
“A rocket exploded among the people,” said Mayor Gilles Bourdouleix, describing the dangerous incident that killed the primary school student and his sister. He said the victims, along with other family members, were about 50 meters away from where the fireworks were set off.
Panic and burning lawns
The blast caused onlookers to flee in panic and the lawns where people had sat to watch the fireworks blazed up, as can be seen briefly in the video.
child dies instantly
The boy died instantly and his 24-year-old sister later died of a heart attack. Seven other people were injured, according to reports.
The parents were in shock and a man close to the sister was badly burned.
The incident happened in the village of Cholet in the department of Maine-et-Loire, where on Friday evening, as in the rest of France, a historic date was celebrated: on July 14, the country commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789, seen as the symbolic beginning of the French Revolution.
