On Thursday evening, heavy storms again with heavy rain, storm and hail over Tyrol: the Pass-Thurn-Straße between Tyrol and Salzburg had to be closed after mudslides. In Wattens (Innsbruck-Land district) there was a stone chipping and in Serfaus there was a forest fire after a lightning strike. The fire brigade also had to be deployed elsewhere – for example in the Zillertal, where underpasses were flooded.
After several mudslides and floods, the B161 (Pass-Thurn-Straße) between Tyrol and Salzburg had to be closed on Thursday evening. According to the ÖAMTC, the road at Jochberg (Kitzbühel district) was interrupted due to the risk of landslides, at kilometer 18 there was mudslide and flooding. The road was also impassable on the Salzburg side due to mudslides and flooding. The Gerlossstraße (B165) also had to be closed in Pinzgau.
Forest fire caused by lightning in Serfaus
In Serfaus in the Landeck district, smoke developed in the forest area after a severe thunderstorm at an altitude of about 1600 meters. “Because of the storm, it can be assumed that the small forest fire was caused by lightning. Due to the impassable terrain and the falling darkness, the extinguishing work turned out to be extremely difficult,” reports the director.
Rockfall on Wattentalstraße
Shortly before 3 a.m. a stone chipping took place on Wattental-Landesstraße in Wattens (Innsbruck-Land district). “Several large boulders fell on the roadway. After the arrival of the volunteer fire brigade from Wattens, the L339 was completely blocked and a detour was put in place,” according to the police. A geologist will receive a photo of the site on Friday. Fortunately no one was injured.
Underpasses flooded, trees fell
There were also emergency weather operations in the Zillertal. As the control center on the “Krone” described, the fire brigades had to evade in Fügen, Schlitters and Stumm – for example because of fallen trees and construction fences. Two underpasses were also flooded.
Alm closed off from the outside world
There was also a mudslide in Kelchsau in the Kitzbühel district. According to the control center, an alpine meadow is currently closed off from the outside world. In Kitzbühel, a hedge fire probably started as a result of a lightning strike.
