While gas storage in this country is currently about 60 percent full, the danger of a winter shortage in Germany, despite much higher fill levels, is not over. For example, the German Bundesnetbureau expects that there may be a regional gas shortage in the coming winter. A full fill of memory is unlikely.
The German gas storage tanks were recently filled faster than expected – the fill level was already at 77 percent on Wednesday. Really major problems are therefore no longer to be expected, but bottlenecks can occasionally occur in winter.
“The restrictions would likely be temporary at first and could end again or occur multiple times,” chief of authorities Klaus Müller told news portal T-Online in an interview published Thursday. Then you must ensure that gas is transported safely through the country.
Need more gas import
The scenario of a regional gas shortage is likely, according to Müller. “But maybe it will get a little better.” To this end, it would have to be ensured that gas imports will increase in the coming year – for example because the two extra private liquid gas terminals will be ready as early as possible or because Germany obtains extra gas from France. “Then we could assume that we will be able to fill our storage tanks more quickly next summer.”
Müller considers it unlikely that the storage tanks will be almost completely filled for this winter. “In all our scenarios, we missed an average fill level of 95 percent on November 1. We will hardly be able to do that, because individual storage tanks started at a very low level.”
