The Vorarlberg cable car manufacturer Doppelmayr is building the longest gondola lift in the world in the Caribbean island state of Dominica. From early 2024, the 6.6-kilometer rail line will also make Boiling Lake – the second largest thermal spring in the world – accessible to day trippers. “Doppelmayr’s cable car engineers are currently working on the cable car technology for the world record circuit,” the company said. No information was given on the financial scope of the project.
Dominica is an island nation in the Lesser Antilles in the eastern Caribbean. About 72,000 people live on about 750 square kilometers, of which 17,000 in the capital Roseau. The Boiling Lake in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park – the park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage – is about 10.5 kilometers east of Roseau.
Currently, a seven-hour walk is required to get from there to the thermal spring and back again. A gondola ride takes 20 minutes in each direction and can transport 1000 people per hour and direction.
The order to Doppelmayr was placed by ABL Holdings LTD. Input Projektentwicklungs GmbH provides a concept for the ecological and economic development of the area. Shopping and rest areas will be located in the valley station, and a restaurant and panoramic terrace in the area around the mountain station. At the highest point is a six meter high statue of the national bird “Sisserou”. A hiking trail takes visitors from the top station to Boiling Lake in just minutes.
