Felbermayr in conversation – How much longer can we survive the crisis?

Date:

WIFO boss Gabriel Felbermayr calls for more help for poorer families despite the brake on electricity prices. And he emphasizes that every kilowatt hour of energy not consumed creates jobs. But politicians have long been calling for energy savings. The crisis is coming to a head as Putin could finally cut off gas to Europe from October 1.

„krone“: Upper Austrians are relieved: we finally have the electricity price brake you invented. But the summer is over, soon we have to heat. Gas is more expensive than ever. Do we need another gas price brake?
Gabriel Felbermayr: The problem with a gas price brake is that people in the cities usually heat with gas, in the countryside more with fuel oil or wood, pellets, which would have to be subsidized – that would be expensive. Rather an electricity price brake! What households are left with will help them pay their gas bills. But it is also clear that we need even more support for all those who are struggling financially. This will have to be reconsidered.
