The CJEU finds that the technology company is breaking the market with the use of its operating system
The Court of Justice of the European Union has imposed a millionaire sanction on Google under antitrust laws as the company has used its Android mobile operating system to crush its rivals. The fine will eventually be EUR 4,125 million.
“The General Court largely upholds the Commission’s decision that Google imposed unlawful restrictions on Android mobile device manufacturers and mobile network operators in order to consolidate the dominant position of its search engine,” the court said. “However, in order to better reflect the seriousness and duration of the infringement, the General Court considers it appropriate to impose a fine of EUR 4,125 million on Google. Its reasoning differs from that of the Commission in certain respects”, argues. the judges. .
The European Commission slammed Google in 2018 for signing illegal contracts with Android manufacturers that failed to comply with antitrust laws. The then trial sentenced the multinational to pay a fine of 4,340 million euros, which was ultimately reduced by about 200 million. The CJEU had to determine on Wednesday whether the company must meet that amount or whether they have adjusted it or canceled the payment.
The Brussels allegations alleged that Google required Android device makers to install its search engine and Chrome browser in exchange for credentials to the Play Store. In addition, their investigation found that the company also paid tech brands so they didn’t install an alternative search engine to Google Search.
Google, for its part, rejected these claims and requested a second opinion from the TGUE. The company noted that the EC’s allegations were completely false and the installation of rival apps was just a click away. Likewise, he took the opportunity to attack Apple, which, they said, imposed its own services like Safari on iPhones and gave them preferences.
