The joy of online retailer Amazon employees at a New York branch did not last long. As the group is now taking action against the union elections, a repeat is being demanded.
As Amazon announced Friday, the US Labor Inspectorate’s National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) had hindered turnout by, among other things, mismanagement in the electoral area and allowing on-site camera teams. The company also accuses the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) of intimidating workers and distributing marijuana to gain votes.
The ALU rejects the online giant’s allegations. Derrick Palmer, vice president of ALU, said Amazon is trying to “humiliate our essence and undermine our efforts.” The majority of the employees of an Amazon branch in the New York borough of Staten Island had already spoken out for the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) union on April 1. The US Labor Inspectorate NLRB declined to comment on the allegations and emphasized its independence. The authority will now consider Amazon’s objections before confirming the election results.
‘Controversial’ ballots in the elections in Bessemer
At the end of March, there was a vote by letter among the employees of the warehouse in the city of Bessemer, Alabama. However, the result is still open: While 993 workers voted against the union’s creation, 875 voted in favor – but there are still 416 “controversial” ballots, the admissibility of which will be decided at an official hearing next week. A year ago, a vote was canceled after authorities discovered Amazon had broken the rules.
