Train journeys increase by 40% due to free subscriptions

Date:

The Transport Minister confirms that 1.5 of the 2 million tickets envisaged in this government-approved measure until the end of the year were ordered in September

Commuting has increased by 24% in September and medium-haul travel by 40% as a result of the free subscriptions promoted by the government from the 1st of this month to combat the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine . This data prompted Transport Minister Raquel Sánchez to confirm that it is a measure that “works” to alleviate the rise in prices for Spanish families.

But also to reduce access traffic to the cities. In fact, the environmental savings are 118 million liters of petrol and up to 360,000 tons of CO2 in the atmosphere compared to if all these journeys had been made by car.

The minister revealed it this Monday in a speech at the New Economy Forum, where she explained that the Spaniards have already requested 1.5 million free vouchers for their train journeys, very close to the target of 2 million in what is left of the year. .

The option that attracts the most returning travelers is the free Cercanías, as 72% of tickets issued correspond to this network, Renfe said in a statement. Only 28% correspond to medium-term bonds. In addition, Renfe sold 30,000 titles in September with discounts of 50% from Avant for the average distance of High Speed.

These figures are not surprising after more than 81,000 people signed up on the first day of registration, 23 times more than the average of just over 3,500 users who registered on the Renfe website before the implementation of this measure.

To acquire the subscription, although it is free, it is necessary to register on the website and make a deposit of 10 euros (Cercanías) or 20 euros (Mid-Distance), which will be paid at the end of the subsidy period. refunded if the traveler has made more than 16 journeys on these trains, with the aim of helping returning travellers. Users who pay this deposit by card will receive the refund automatically from December 31, while those who paid in cash will be refunded at the cash registers of the stations.
