High salary premiums rise above inflation every year

Escrivá intends to agree on an additional rate of increase of the maximum bases to be added to that of prices and to establish a “predictable” mechanism

The Minister of Social Security, José Luis Escrivá, announced on Monday what plans he is working on to increase the maximum contribution bases for the coming decades, one of the two measures on the table of the social dialogue that will be approved before the end. of the year, as agreed with Brussels. The goal is for the quota of the highest-earning workers, which have been capped, to be increased above inflation over the next three decades.

In other words, each year the contributions paid to Social Security by approximately 1.1 million employees will increase by an additional percentage over the previous year’s CPI. And that extra increase is what the minister wants to agree with trade unions and employers in these two and a half months until the end of the year.

According to Escrivá, the maximum bases, like pensions, should increase with annual inflation. “We’ve always added inflation. It has always been transferred like this,” he said. Therefore, during the press conference in which he presented his department’s Budgets for 2023, the minister was very surprised by the reaction generated in the CEOE by the increase of 8.6% of the maximum bases laid down in the accounts The employers sent a harsh statement labeling this government decision as “inadmissible” and “unpresentable”.

“We don’t surprise anyone,” defended the former president of the Tax Office (Airef), who described the employers’ criticisms as “unfair” and “selective”. “That’s fair and also the most predictable for business people,” he repeated.

“Surprising”, “unfair” and “selective”. For example, the Minister of Social Security, José Luis Escrivá, considers the criticism launched last week by the CEOE about the 8.6% increase in the maximum contribution bases, which increases the share of employees who earn the most to 4,495 euros per month.
