Prices, bottlenecks – the Federal Competition Authority investigates the food industry

Date:

The Federal Competition Authority (BWB) is scrutinizing the domestic food industry in view of rising prices and supply chain problems. The government wants to find out, among other things, where in the value chain the price increases have gone in 2022, the BWB reports in a broadcast on Tuesday. It is also examined how the concentration within different product categories and the share of own brands has developed.

How competitive factors in the food industry have changed in recent years is another question that the government wants to pursue. In addition, the competitive role of online commerce in the sector should be explored. The research uses a micro-shopping basket with groceries for daily needs.

“Focus on daily needs”
“Markets that affect everyday needs, such as food or heating, are currently the focus of the Federal Competition Authority,” explains the BWB’s interim director, Natalie Harsdorf-Borsch. If necessary, the BWB wants to formulate recommendations to ensure sustainable competition in food. The last industry survey took place in 2007, so it has been fifteen years already.
