Are the gas storage facilities in Austria sufficient? What about current gas and electricity consumption and how are prices developing? Many people ask themselves these questions in the energy crisis. A new online platform now wants to create an overview.
On energie.wifo.ac.at you will find current energy data, such as gas storage levels and wholesale energy prices. “We also publish temperature-adjusted estimates of gas savings. This shows, for example, that gas savings by households and businesses were offset by a greater use of gas in electricity production – nevertheless, compared to the high temperatures, gas consumption was very low,” said Johannes Schmidt of the Institute for Sustainable Economic Development at the University of Natural Sciences. Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) Vienna Together with Peter Reschenhofer from the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFI), he collects the data and prepares it graphically.

The two are currently developing a graph that shows actual gas consumption in relation to various availability scenarios. For the winter, the starting position is “relatively positive”, according to Reschenhofer. The reservoirs are very well filled in both Europe and Austria “and are still being filled, while storage withdrawals have already been carried out in early November in recent years.”
However, if it gets very cold and Russia completely cuts off its gas supply, the situation could deteriorate dramatically. The aim of the new platform is to inform the population and, if possible, to stimulate behavioral changes.
