Foreign skilled workers with the Red-White-Red card should help to fill the many vacancies in Austria.
The list of missing workers for 2023 is getting longer than ever: in addition to classics such as chefs or roofers, electricians, civil engineers and forwarding specialists have also been added. Also the need for accountants, nurses or personnel in special physical and technical professions cannot be covered in this country. The national list contains a total of 100 professions, a further 58 will be added regionally.
“By significantly expanding the list of shortage occupations, we are stepping up our efforts to combat the shortage of labor and skilled labor as best we can,” explained Labor Minister Martin Kocher. For these professions, the red-white-red card is easier to obtain and allows companies to recruit workers from abroad. This year, 1,890 cards had been issued at the end of October, more than twice as many as in 2021. Tourism is asking for additional measures and the union wants better working conditions.
