Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) announces another energy cost subsidy for companies. Due to the new German model for a gas price brake, improvement is needed here – there should be no competitive advantage for German industry, the Chancellor said.
The measure is currently being negotiated between the Ministries of Finance, Economy and Infrastructure and should be available before Christmas, Nehammer explained in the ORF press hour on Sunday. Of the announced additional 500 million euros for the expansion of housing and heating subsidies, 50 million euros will be reserved for measures against homelessness. “If evictions are imminent, that must be prevented,” says Nehammer.
Nehammer sharply criticized the FPÖ leader and his criticism of the sanctions against Russia because of the war in Ukraine: “What the radicalized Herbert Kickl says with his FPÖ is pure nonsense.” His statements are “identical to Russian war propaganda”. And: “The fact that we live in difficult times today is because of the war and not because of the sanctions.”
Poll results leave the chancellor cold
The Chancellor and ÖVP leader gives little in the way of current poll results, which see his party only in third place. The only numbers that interest him until the next National Council elections in 2024 are the level of inflation and gas storage. Vote shares are only relevant on Election Day. That it is not easy to be ÖVP chairman at the moment is “no secret”, Nehammer admitted. However, given the crises, that is irrelevant. “Do you really think a poll like this would shock me when I see it?”
