Jaime Echegoyen, former chairman of Sareb, dies

Date:

Prior to joining the bad bank, he was CEO of Barclays in Spain and Portugal and of Bankinter

The former president of Sareb (Sociedad de Gestión de Activos Procedentes de la Restructuración Bancaria) and former CEO of Bankinter, Jaime Echegoyen (Madrid, 1956), died of illness on Saturday.

It was in March 2014 when Echegoyen joined the entity set up to absorb the banks’ toxic assets after the previous financial crisis as CEO, only to be named president a year later.

After seven years in office, the manager tendered his resignation in May 2021 for “personal reasons”. His decision coincided with the start of the government’s plans to acquire the more than 50% stake that CaixaBank, Banco Santander and Banco Sabadell still control, with the aim of making the entity capital and state-owned.

Echegoyen graduated in law from the Complutense University of Madrid and has more than 35 years of experience in the national and international financial sector, during which he held various positions of high responsibility.

Before joining the so-called ‘bad bank’, he was CEO of Barclays in Spain and Portugal (2011-2013) and before that of Bankinter (2002-2010), an entity where he started working in 1988. Before joining Bankinter, Echegoyen spent nine years at Bank of America, in the New York and London offices.

More recently, and after leaving Sareb, Echegoyen joined the board of directors of Asturian real estate consultancy Izertis in 2021. And in October of the same year, he was named the new president of Trade & Working Capital (TWC).
