Almost every tenth in Austria did not buy Christmas gifts this time. The trade association announced this in a broadcast on Friday. Austrian retailers are nevertheless satisfied with the final sprint of the Christmas business.
Many vouchers would give hope for good business in January. In addition to vouchers, clothing, toys, books, sweets, perfume and cosmetic products were mainly purchased. 22 to 24 December are the shopping days with the highest turnover in the food trade. “Here, up to 40 percent more turnover is expected than on average shopping days,” representatives of the trade association said on Friday.
All in all, retailers will probably achieve the expected additional turnover of EUR 1.36 billion net this year. Adjusted for inflation, the industry is therefore leveling off at last year’s sales level and 2022 will not be able to keep up with those of the years before the crisis.
Mixed start
“It is remarkable that almost a tenth of the population has completely given up selling gifts,” the association said in a press release. The start of the Christmas business was “mixed”, the final spurt was satisfactory.
