The Austrian population spends an average of 40 euros on New Year’s Eve gifts and party accessories. This is evident from a current analysis by the sector organization. The most popular are lucky charms and candies.
“At around 40 euros, the same amount will be spent on New Year’s Eve this year as last year. Cash gifts and vouchers are much more popular this year in the price crisis. Traditionally, good luck charms and sweets should not be missing from the gifts,” said Rainer Will, director of the German Trade Association, in a broadcast. Homemade products, toys and fireworks are also popular.
Pay attention to pyrotechnics certification
Although more and more Austrians do without fireworks because of sustainability and animal welfare, others can hardly imagine New Year’s Eve without it. “If you want to ring in the new year with your own fireworks, you shouldn’t take the choice of pyrotechnics lightly. Buy certified products from local retailers and avoid shopping abroad. The risk of injury is enormous with products that do not meet the guidelines,” advises Will.
Most of the money will probably be spent in Vienna. In total, about ten percent of the Christmas trade is still handled between the Christmas holidays and New Year’s Eve. Redeeming gifts in cash and vouchers contributes to this, according to the trade association.
Supermarket open until 6 pm
Shops may remain open until 5 p.m. on the last day of the year, groceries an hour longer. There are exceptions for the confectionery, flower and New Year’s Eve trade. These may remain open until 8 p.m. However, individual retailers may decide to close their branches earlier.
