The donation will be fully converted into more than 2,300 tons of essential products
Mercadona customers and the company itself donate more than 3.5 million euros to food banks that will be completely transformed into more than 2,300 tons of food. This delivery is the result of the solidarity and participation of customers in the Great Food Collection 2022 organized by the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (Fesbal) and the donation of more than 10% of the total amount raised that Mercadona adds to this solidarity initiative.
The money raised will be fully converted into essential products that will go to each of the participating food banks, who will decide exactly what type of product they need, as well as the quantity and time of delivery to better meet the needs of the end users they serve .
Paula Llop, Mercadona’s Director of Social Responsibility and Business Relations, has acknowledged the work of the volunteers participating in the Grand Collection, stressing that it is “a key factor in the success and outcome of the campaign”. In turn, Pedro Llorca, president of Fesbal, emphasized Mercadona’s commitment and commitment and thanked the company and its customers for their solidarity.
In the Region, the company, which participated with a total of 63 stores, managed to collect a total of 57,115 euros, 41% more than in 2021. This amount, converted into basic necessities requested by the Segura Food Bank, will be intended for users who center daily.
On the other hand, Mercadona develops the company’s Social Responsibility Plan, which addresses the social and ethical component through different lines of action.
In this sense, it partners with more than 500 soup kitchens, more than 60 food banks and other entities that receive donations to support people in a difficult situation. Similarly, Mercadona is partnering with 32 foundations and vocational centers to decorate their stores with trencadís murals, created by more than 1,000 people with intellectual disabilities.
Another strategic line of the Social Responsibility Plan is sustainability. To this end, it has its own Environmental Management System, based on the principles of the circular economy and aimed at logistical optimisation, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable production and plastic reduction. In this sense, it is working with its suppliers Totaler on Strategy 6.25 to achieve a 25% plastic reduction by 2025, to make all packaging made of this material recyclable and to recycle all this waste. In addition, it is working on the Sustainable Urban Distribution Project and improving air quality in cities through trucks and vans powered by cleaner technologies.
