When it comes to chip manufacturing, the island nation of Taiwan is a world power. With the opening of the first factory with state-of-the-art 3-nanometer production, market leader TSMC, which supplies major customers of Apple processors, underlines this status – and sends a message.
At the start of the week near Tainan, a city of 1.8 million people in Taiwan, representatives of the technology leader in chip manufacturing, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC for short), invited people to an unusual ceremony. Their state-of-the-art facility, the “Fab 18” in Southern Taiwan Science Park, is ceremoniously inaugurating a new production line – the world’s first to produce 3-nanometer chips. The celebration is unusual – TSMC has been at the forefront of new technology many times. Most of the time, however, such changes were made quietly. Why it was different this time.
