The freighter Glory ran aground in the Suez Canal. The forwarder, the Norwegian company Leth, announced this on Monday. As a result, the ship ran aground near the city of El Qantara, as evidenced by satellite data. According to an initial statement from the canal authority, tugboats have now succeeded in getting the ship afloat again.
According to the Joint Coordination Center, which oversees the grain deal between Ukraine and Russia, the Glory is carrying 65,000 tons of corn from Ukraine to be shipped to China. The ship was therefore inspected in Istanbul on 3 January.
Evokes memories of Ever Given
The accident evokes memories of the days of the blockade of the Suez Canal by the container ship Ever Given in March 2021. The giant freighter became stuck and blocked passage, significantly disrupting international shipping traffic.
About ten percent of the world’s maritime trade passes through the Suez Canal, which connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
