The government is extending the increase in non-contributory pensions by 15% throughout the year
The revaluation of pensions approved last year already entered into force in 2023. Unemployment and SEPE unemployment benefits and subsidies are also rising. From January 1, the government will apply the 8.5% increase to the amounts that pensioners and other beneficiaries receive on widow’s pension, permanent disability, orphans and family favour. And it maintains for another year the extraordinary 15% increase in non-contributory old age and disability pensions and the minimum vital income that was applied in 2022 to alleviate inflation.
The so-called extraordinary 15% increase in the non-contributory old-age and disability pension was launched on 1 July 2022 to deal with the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine. Being an extraordinary measure, it had a date limit: December 31, 2022. However, the Executive has decided to extend the increase throughout 2023.
Non-contributory benefits are granted to people who are in a situation of protection need, do not have sufficient means of subsistence and have never contributed or have not contributed long enough to reach non-contributory benefits. It is a tool managed by the competent authorities of each Autonomous Community, so the application should not be submitted to the SEPE or Social Security offices or on the website.
While the procedure is different, all territories have the same age requirements for entry. You must be older than 18 and not older than 65 for the disability pension. You must have reached the age of 65 during the pension scheme. For both benefits, you must demonstrate that you have no or sufficient income.
Before the increase, the amount of non-contributory pensions amounted to 5,899 euros per year, including the two extraordinary summer and Christmas benefits. In 2023, pensioners will receive 885 euros more, bringing the total to 6,784.54 euros, divided over 14 payments of 484.61 euros per month. Those who receive this non-contributory pension for old age and disability will therefore receive a total of 900 euros in extraordinary benefits in the months of June and November. The 484.61 euros per month corresponds to the full amount.
This is how the monthly amounts will remain in 2023:
Full: 484.61 euros
Minimum: 121.15 euros
Two beneficiaries: 411.92 euros
Supplement 3rd person: 242.31 euros
Full plus the 3rd person supplement: 726.92 euros
The supplement is a supplementary benefit to non-contributory pension that is granted when the beneficiary lives as a contract holder in a rental home and does not own a home.
