Everyone is moaning because of price increases and high inflation, and yet: the consumption of champagne and co is increasing. The “Champagne Committee” announced 2022 as a record champagne year – despite higher prices. But the Austrians are also making waves when it comes to domestic sparkling wines. How does it work, who can afford it? We’ve got the details.
The “Comité Champagne” – umbrella organization of 16,000 Champagne winegrowers and 340 houses – achieved more than six billion euros in sales worldwide in the previous year (2021: 5.7 billion); in Austria alone, sales of champagne increased by 22.3 percent. And with 1.85 million champagne bottles, 12.5 percent more were sold than in 2021. Austria is still ahead of China in terms of volume. And that despite the pandemic and lower product availability and the resulting price increase.
