Passenger numbers at Vienna Airport remained below pre-pandemic levels in March. However, the numbers have risen sharply compared to last year. The Vienna location handled 2.1 million passengers last month, 65.4 percent more than in March 2022, the company announced on Thursday. However, in March 2019, the number of passengers was still 2.4 million.
In contrast to the Vienna location, passenger numbers at the airport holdings in Malta and Kosice were already above pre-Corona levels. Passenger traffic at Malta Airport increased by 53.8 percent to 487,117 travelers. That was 2 percent more than in March 2019. At Kosice Airport, the number of passengers rose by 37.1 percent to 35,065 people, 17.7 percent more than in 2019.
Most travel to Western Europe
In Vienna, the number of local passengers rose 58.8 percent year-on-year to 1.57 million, while the number of transfer passengers rose 93.1 percent to 473,280 people. There were 16,114 take-offs and landings (+36.6 percent) and an increase in cargo volume of 5.6 percent to 23,237 tonnes.
Most passengers traveled from Vienna to Western Europe (687,452, an increase of 56.7 percent) and Eastern Europe (165,387, an increase of 87.4 percent). 24,699 travelers (98.6 percent more) flew to North America, 26,215 (69.0 percent more) to Africa and 78,791 (64.3 percent more) to the Near and Middle East. 37,861 passengers traveled to the Far East (+359.6 percent).
