The outstanding salaries for Kika/Leiner employees will flow in July, but the AMS expects fewer layoffs than expected. There are also 1700 “sector-related” positions across Austria.
Good news for the workers affected by the insolvency of Kika/Leiner: around 300 companies across Austria have already expressed interest in the workforce, explains Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP). These are, for example, the Austrian army, furniture competitor XXXLutz, Spar and dm. AMS boss Johannes Kopf adds that 1,700 vacancies are currently reported to AMS in related companies (furniture, textile and carpet industry).
Currently, 1034 Kika/Leiner employees are registered with the AMS early warning system. He expects a second wave of layoffs within a month. “In general, however, there won’t be as many as initially said,” Kopf said. In fact, there were as many as 1,900 fewer jobs.
Kitchen planning versus grocery
The ÖGB countered that it was not so easy for “a kitchen designer to work in the food trade”. The broad regional spread certainly comes in handy when looking for a job. Of the current 1034 deletions, 233 are in Upper Austria, 182 in Lower Austria, 166 in Styria and 155 in Tyrol. As for open wages and special payments, they should be paid at the beginning of July.
