The company behind AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT, OpenAI, has chosen the UK capital as the location for its first non-US office. “London’s vibrant technology ecosystem and exceptional talent pool make the city an ideal location for OpenAI’s first international office,” said the California-based company.
The British government welcomed the decision as a sign of the company’s “confidence” in the attractiveness of the country. When it comes to artificial intelligence (AI), Britain is currently positioning itself as particularly innovation-friendly compared to the EU.
The industry “already employs more than 50,000 people across the country and we will continue to promote an approach that creates opportunity and solidifies our place as a global artificial intelligence destination,” technology secretary Chloe Smith told AFP.
The EU, in turn, wants to comprehensively regulate the development and use of AI systems as quickly as possible to counter the risk of fraud and other potentially much more serious threats. OpenAI boss Sam Altman threatened in May that he would no longer offer the popular chatbot ChatGPT in the EU if the regulations were too strict.
