Protests against an Amazon warehouse in St. Valentin are growing louder. To increase pressure on city politics, about forty members of the citizens’ initiative presented the municipal council with a list of 2,000 signatures. The aim is to prevent the purchase of the property and its subsequent repurposing.
Exactly a year after the online shipping giant’s efforts to set up a distribution center in St. Valentin became public, the largest protest to date took place on Monday. Forty members of the citizens’ initiative handed over more than 2,000 signatures to Mayor Kerstin Mayr-Suchan (SP) before the municipal meeting. “We want to make our voices heard. We are not against corporate settlements. “We don’t want an American sweatshop that doesn’t pay taxes,” spokeswoman Susanne Webersdorfer explains.
Citizens’ initiative calls for rejection of real estate sales
She appealed to city politicians to reject the land sale in votes scheduled for the end of the year. They are also not allowed to give permission for the new redistribution of the exploitation area.
“In 2006, the former field was redesigned as a low-emission operating area. Out of respect for the residents, it must remain that way. A distribution center is certainly not low-emission,” says Webersdorfer. As reported, the city council has so far only made a fundamental decision for the online giant’s warehouse.
