In the krone.tv interview, Julian Jäger, board member of Vienna Airport, surprised us with unexpectedly high passenger numbers in the summer months: “In the main travel months of July and August we had three million passengers at the airport and even in September there were still always 2.9 million.” Jäger expects 28.5 million passengers for the entire year, which would be almost the same as in the record year 2019, the best year in the airport’s history to date.
Then came Corona and with it a dramatic collapse in passenger numbers, but the recovery started in 2020 and this year the previous record result of 2019 is apparently close to being achieved again: “Air traffic is flourishing again, Spain, Greece and Turkey are the absolute Vienna Leader. ”
Is the “third slope” coming?
You can currently fly from Vienna to more than 200 destinations, with India and China being the growth targets for the coming years. Whether the so-called “third runway” will be constructed at the airport must be decided by 2026, otherwise specified completion deadlines would not be met.
Eight flights a week to Israel
As for the current direct Vienna – Tel Aviv service, Jäger refers to the Israeli airline EL AL, which still operates direct flights eight times a week despite the war: “Before the start of the war there were a total of 44 weekly connections between Vienna and Tel Aviv with different airlines: “Now there are eight.” The current situation is of course continuously monitored, but the situation in Israel is dramatic.
