Online retailer Amazon has partnered with several travel portals such as Expedia and Booking.com to take action against fake user reviews on their platforms. The goal is to “protect access to trusted consumer reviews worldwide,” the companies said in a joint statement published Tuesday.
Methods will now be jointly developed to reliably identify fake reviews.
Exchange about planned scams
To do this, standards and definitions must first be developed, the platforms explain. In addition, information will be collected and shared on how fraudsters operate, “such as companies that sell fake reviews to companies to unfairly and inappropriately improve their reputation.”
Online platforms have been accused for years of not doing enough to combat fake reviews. The European Union adopted a directive in 2019 intended to protect consumers against this. The Amazon group wants to meet in Brussels in early December to discuss how to proceed.
