According to insiders, the American chip company Broadcom is contacting cloud specialist VMware. Broadcom is in talks to buy, several people familiar with the matter told Reuters news agency Monday evening.
Negotiations are underway and a deal is not forthcoming. Further details could not be learned. Bloomberg first reported on the talks. Broadcom and VMware were initially unavailable.
Cases Previously Focused on Semiconductors
By purchasing VMware, Broadcom could further diversify its primarily semiconductor business. The company is known for major acquisitions. Broadcom acquired CA Technologies for nearly $19 billion and bought Symantec’s security division for $10.7 billion.
At Friday’s closing price, VMware had a market value of more than $40 billion. American businessman and Dell founder Michael Dell owns 40 percent of VMware.
