US software company Microsoft’s billion-dollar investment in OpenAI has prompted EU competition watchdogs into action. The European Union wants to investigate whether Microsoft’s investment in the developer of the chatbot software ChatGPT may fall under the EU Merger Regulation, the European Commission announced on Tuesday.
The American software giant committed to an investment of more than 10 billion dollars (9 billion euros) last year without wanting to take a voting position on the OpenAI board. According to its own information, Microsoft does not own shares in OpenAI.
At the beginning of December, the British antitrust regulator scrutinized the collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI. She wanted to determine whether the American software company’s investments amounted to a takeover. Just over a year ago, OpenAI helped generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology achieve a global breakthrough with ChatGPT.
