The winter season has been going well for local tourism businesses so far. Between November and January, overnight stays across Austria rose by 4.4 percent to 32.05 million, according to preliminary results from Statistics Austria. “The increase is mainly due to guests from abroad, who account for three quarters of overnight stays,” says Tobias Thomas, Managing Director of Statistics Austria.
Halfway through the winter season, overnight stays by guests from abroad increased by 4.5 percent to 24.60 million, and those by guests from Austria by 4 percent to 7.45 million.
Significant increase in Asian guests
Between November and January there was a strong increase in the number of overnight stays by Asian guests. The number of overnight stays by Chinese tourists has more than doubled compared to the previous comparable period. The number of overnight stays by guests from Japan (+62 percent), South Korea (+69 percent) and Taiwan (+108 percent) also increased significantly.
Overnight stays from the most important source markets Germany (+1 percent) and the Netherlands (+4 percent) increased slightly.
In January, 15.47 million overnight stays were registered in Austrian accommodation establishments. Compared to January of last year, this is an increase of 2.9 percent. The number of guests increased by 4.3 percent to 3.72 million in the same period.
