High unemployment rate – Many people are looking for a job in these sectors

Date:

At the end of February, the unemployment rate in Austria was 7.6 percent. In some sectors it is even significantly higher, up to 20 percent. This includes, for example, construction.

At the end of February, 50,934 employees in the construction sector were registered with the Employment Service (AMS) as unemployed or in training. This is an increase of 6.3 percent compared to the previous year or an unemployment rate of 20 percent. At the same time, vacancy has been decreasing since the summer months of 2022. In the construction sector there are mainly small companies with a maximum of nine employees. These are mainly active in the construction and installation of electrical, sanitary, heating and air conditioning systems.

Here you can view the unemployment figures in detail.

There are also many unemployed people in the retail, catering and goods manufacturing sectors. Many people are currently registered as unemployed in the transport and warehousing sectors, as well as in healthcare and social services, as shown by current AMS figures. People with a migrant background, as well as teenagers and young adults, are more affected by unemployment than other groups.

Academics increasingly unemployed
In the field of training, academics were particularly hard hit at the end of February (plus 18.4 percent). In absolute figures, people who had completed at most compulsory education were mainly unemployed. This happens to them considerably more often than, for example, people with an apprentice qualification or a higher, non-academic education. In terms of gender, more men than women were unemployed in February.

In total, people were registered as job seekers for an average of 102 days, just over three months. “Currently, qualified workers are being sought in almost all sectors. Demand is particularly high in sectors such as tourism and retail. The more people we train now as part of an internship, the more qualified personnel will be available for the labor market and companies in a few years,” Minister of Labor and Economy Martin Kocher (ÖVP) is convinced.
