Tesla boss Elon Musk wants to cut about every tenth job. In an internal email to executives on Thursday, the world’s richest person, with an estimated net worth of $227 billion, said he had a “very bad feeling” about economic development.
The American manufacturer of electric cars therefore has to reduce its workforce by about ten percent. The email Reuters received was labeled “Recruitment freeze”. Tesla was not immediately available for comment.
Musk only made headlines on Wednesday by banning his staff from working from home. “If someone doesn’t show up, we have to assume that person has left the company,” the letter read, without a polite salutation, with the subject line “super clear.”
Attendance is required
In the email, the Tesla boss swore by the need for attendance. He is known for being constantly on site at the factory when there are production problems. He did this so the linemen could watch him work next to them. “Had I not done that, Tesla would have gone bankrupt long ago,” he wrote.
There may be companies that do not require a presence. “But when was the last time they delivered a great new product? It has been a while.”
