Social media, AI – new holes for cyber attacks in companies

Date:

Anyone who hoped that the wave of cybercrime would subside was wrong. On the contrary: “The methods are becoming increasingly advanced,” warns expert Martin Heimhilcher of the Chamber of Commerce. This knowledge is also traded in relevant circles. Under the motto: “Pay attention, these 15 companies have this gap.”

After the “usual” extraction of data, modern production systems and machines in companies connected via the Internet have already created new “gateways” for cybercrime. The increasingly ‘smarter’ machines, which essentially control themselves or are connected to others via an internet network and exchange information (for example whether a service will be needed soon), are also becoming more vulnerable to data thieves thanks to advanced technology.

For example, in Las Vegas, cybercriminals gained access to a company’s aquarium temperature monitoring data. This is how they subsequently cracked the casino software.

The next threat is artificial intelligence. For example, via fake telephone calls from the boss, whose voice is imitated. Martin Heimhilcher: “A five-second sample is enough to imitate a voice. What can you do about it? A possible barrier could be the good old password.”

And caution is advised when making friendly contacts via social media. Heimhilcher: “Emotional ties can then lead to internal data being made public. Employees are often not even aware of the benefits that questioners get from this information.”

As cyber attacks become more common, the only thing that can help prevent them is software or regular training and internal security controls. Insuring against damage caused by cybercrime (for example preventing invoices from being sent) is also becoming increasingly important.
