AMS board member Herbert Buchinger announced on Friday that he will be leaving his position early, at the end of June 2023. His term of office would actually run until June 30, 2024. The reason Buchinger spoke about his “malignant health” is still being sought.
“It is now the task of the board of directors to take the next steps,” Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) said in a broadcast. Co-chairman of the Employment Services (AMS) is and remains Johannes Kopf.
Since 1994 Chairman of the Board of Directors
Buchinger has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Public Employment Service in Austria since the inception of the AMS in 1994. The lawyer previously worked for several years as an advisor to the cabinet of the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Josef Hesoun. Since 2006 he shares the chairmanship with Kopf; The double appointment under the then Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Bartenstein was preceded by fierce political squabbles. Among political observers, Buchinger was attributed to the SPÖ and head of the ÖVP. The previous Buchinger deputy Herbert Böhm was replaced.
Brothers in the board
In 2011, under the then Minister of Social Affairs Rudolf Hundstorfer (SPÖ), Buchinger was reappointed, as was Kopf. The procedure was repeated in 2017 under Social Affairs Minister Alois Stöger (SPÖ). His fellow board member Johannes Kopf was mainly present in public – and his brother, ex-Minister of Social Affairs Erwin Buchinger (SPÖ).
