The accident at the OMV refinery in Schwechat also affects deliveries to neighboring Hungary. The delay in starting up the main distillation plant, which has been under maintenance for weeks, could mean that the oil company could close its service stations in Hungary, according to a report.
OMV operates about 200 service stations in Hungary, covering 17-19 percent of the petrol market and 13-15 percent of diesel. According to estimates, OMV would export 30 kilotons of petrol and 50 kilotons of diesel to Hungary from June to August, writes the online portal “Vilag Gazdasag”. As petrol prices in Hungary are capped at 480 forints per liter and petrol and diesel prices across Europe are significantly higher, foreign suppliers are not interested in serving the Hungarian market.
Hungarian oil company cannot offset losses
If the OMV filling stations were closed, the Hungarian oil company MOL would not be able to offset the losses. Due to the incident in Schwechat, MOL has postponed its own upcoming maintenance of the refinery in Szazhalombatta until August and October. According to “Vilag Gazdasag” there is initially no solution for a problem-free delivery for these two months.
Delivery problems can also arise in Slovakia. However, it is said that the failures in OMV deliveries there could be more easily compensated.
