In Austria, less gas and electricity were consumed in the winter of 2023/2024 than the year before. This is evident from data from energy regulator E-Control. At the same time, a small surplus was achieved on electricity exports.
A decrease in consumption and a greater input of electricity into the public grid contributed to this (plus 18 percent). In winter, 33.7 billion kWh of electricity was supplied to the electricity grid in Austria, more than half of which came from hydroelectric power stations (51 percent), some from wind turbines (17 percent) and thermal power stations (13 percent).
In March 2024, generation from thermal power stations was reduced. They produced only ten percent of the electricity, hydroelectric power stations half and wind turbines contributed 18.6 percent. Eleven percent of final consumption came from photovoltaic solar energy. However, a large part of this is not entered into the public network, according to E-Control.
Storage tank three-quarters full
At the end of March, at the end of winter, the warehouses were about three-quarters full, significantly better than a year ago. Electricity consumption fell by 1.3 percent and gas consumption by seven percent in the winter of 2023/2024.
