Volkswagen is doing well with the announced austerity measures. In order to gain clarity about their own future, employees in Brussels decided on a special form of protest: they stole the keys of some 200 vehicles at an Audi factory threatened with closure.
They want to force the management to provide clarity about the future of the location, according to the Belgian press agency Belga. Until this happens, no car will leave the factory.
Management does not want to be blackmailed
According to information, Audi does not want to accept the blackmail and has threatened to file a complaint if the keys are not returned by Monday afternoon. Accordingly, those responsible can be identified using surveillance camera recordings.
Audi announced in July that the cessation of activities in Brussels could not be ruled out. The reason given was the weak development of demand for the electric SUVs Q8 e-tron produced at the factory.
Thousands of people are now worried about their jobs
The site recently employed around 3,000 employees. Their concerns were heightened last Tuesday when Audi’s parent company Volkswagen announced that no other model would be produced in Brussels in the coming years.
According to the union, workers have already responded with work stoppages in recent days, preventing production from resuming after the summer holidays. A major protest day is planned for September 16.
