The number of new registrations of electric cars fell in the first three quarters

The number of new car registrations increased in the first three quarters, but electric cars lost popularity: of the 191,023 vehicles, only 32,632 electric cars were newly registered – compared to the same period last year, according to Statistics Austria, this corresponds to a decrease of 6, 5 percent.

Overall, new car registrations increased by 4.4 percent. Statistics Austria also found that the number of registrations for electric cars increased slightly again in September: the authority recorded an increase of 3.9 percent.

Petrol hybrid drives scored points
In the first three quarters, 64,604 petrol cars and 35,122 diesel cars were registered. While new registrations of petrol engines increased by 7.6 percent, there was a decline of 3.7 percent for diesel engines. Passenger cars with purely conventional propulsion accounted for 52.2 percent of all new registrations. When it comes to alternative drive systems, cars with petrol hybrid drive score high: license plates increased by 18.3 percent to 47,836 cars. Only 10,796 cars had a diesel hybrid (-2.1 percent).

The majority of new registrations, 68.1 percent, went to legal entities, companies and local authorities. Diesel and diesel hybrids were particularly popular here, followed by purely electric cars.

VW was the most popular new car
In the first nine months, VW again led the brand rankings with 14.9 percent, followed by Skoda (9.8 percent) and BMW (7.4 percent). Dacia, Toyota and BMW registered an increase in new registrations, while Tesla, Hyundai and Audi registered a decrease.

New registrations of two-wheelers were fairly stable: 9,693 motorized bicycles (up 1.8 percent) and 32,947 motorcycles (down 0.8 percent) were newly registered. When it comes to commercial vehicles, trucks up to twelve tons were particularly popular. With 485 vehicles, new registrations increased by 63.9 percent. Furthermore, 25,614 trucks up to 3.5 tons were registered – 12.4 percent more than in the same period last year. And there were 3,042 new registrations for trucks of more than twelve tons (plus 16.1 percent). With 2,926 semi-trailer trucks, there was a decrease of 13.7 percent. The number of new registrations of tractors used in agriculture and forestry fell by 2.4 percent to 5,325 vehicles.
