The number of illegal postings, mainly from Slovenia, is rising to record highs. Bosniaks and Serbs are undercutting wages by more than 10 percent and damaging our economy.
The Austrian construction sector is sounding the alarm: organized wage and social dumping – both by the bogus self-employed and workers – is on the rise. In the first half of the year there were more broadcasts to Austria than ever before. Josef Muchitsch, head of the Bau-Holz union, expects more than 20,000 for the whole year, more than before the Corona crisis in 2019.
Muchitsch: “This is in violation of the EU Posting of Workers Directive”
“We’re dealing with a bunch of dubious scams that originated in other EU countries,” Muchitsch says. 35 percent of all construction postings come from Slovenia – but 73 percent of workers posted there are not from Slovenia, but from the Western Balkans, especially Bosnia and Serbia, which are not members of the EU. They undercut domestic wages by more than ten percent. Muchitsch: “This is a scandal and contradicts the EU Posting of Workers Directive.”
Muchitsch calls on the federal government to intervene in Brussels for clarification.
Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) has announced that he will step up his fight against wage and social dumping, particularly in the construction and construction-related trade, transport and parcel service providers and the food trade. A total of 1,300 inspections are planned this year, adds Labor Minister Martin Kocher.
