Lucky charms etc. – Austrians spend about 126 euros on New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve also includes giving away lucky charms, a bottle of sparkling wine or enjoying special culinary specialties. On average, Mr and Mrs Austrians are investing 126 euros per person in the New Year’s celebration this year.

“An important sales boost for domestic retailers,” said director of trade organization Rainer Will about the results of the market researchers from Reppublika.

The turnover of around 600 million euros mainly benefits the food and beverage trade, but also other sectors such as the stationery trade, hardware stores and fashion stores and various sales stands (for example for lucky charms).

Viennese are the most generous
Spending per capita is highest in Vienna at 139 euros, followed by Upper Austria and Salzburg with 134 euros. Styria and Carinthia spend relatively the least on New Year’s Eve celebrations (112 euros).

The regions of Lower Austria and Burgenland, as well as Tyrol and Vorarlberg, are approximately at the same level as the national average (120 euros each).

Lucky charm on the right front
Every second person buys lucky charms and culinary specialties, closely followed by sparkling wine, champagne or other alcoholic drinks (47 percent). A quarter treat themselves to special sweets, 14 percent invest in fireworks and almost as many invest in decorative items.

When it comes to good intentions, 72 percent want to take better care of themselves in the coming year. For 62 percent, the focus is on healthy eating, with slightly less exercise and exercise. And 58 percent plan more time for friends and family.
