Now Vienna has also shaken off the pandemic in terms of tourism – last year the Danube metropolis broke all records
The numbers speak for themselves: 2024 was a year of superlatives for Viennese tourism. “The best year since records began,” says city councilor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke (SPÖ).
Best result since records began
With a record number of 18.9 million guest nights and a turnover increase of no less than 34 percent compared to 2019, the turnover barrier of billions was already broken in November. The details show an impressive development: with a room occupancy rate of 71 percent and a share of international guests of 82 percent, the city’s attractiveness is visible in all facets.
The world is a guest in Vienna
Michael Trestl of Austrian Airlines: “The world is hungry for Vienna.” The top five tourists per country: Germany, the rest of Austria, the US, Italy and Great Britain. In addition, major events and conferences attract tens of thousands of guests every year.
Great synergy effects
With an 11 percent increase in arrivals (8.17 million) and a nine percent increase in overnight stays, Vienna is proving to be a crisis-proof tourist destination and an indispensable economic factor. Areas such as gastronomy, retail and culture also benefit from this.
Tourism creates thousands of jobs
This secures thousands of jobs all year round. Norbert Kettner, director of WienTourismus: “Tourism means value creation, quality of life and an economy of good coexistence.” In the fight against ‘overtourism’, Grätzel outside the 1st district should also receive more attention. Kettner: “A traffic-calmed city center is at the top of the new federal government’s wish list.”
