The prices in wholesalers have risen at the start of the year. With watches and jewelry it is plus 17.5 percent, with coffee, tea, cocoa and herbs it is 12.9 percent. Non -alcoholic drinks (eleven percent) follow in wholesalers.
“Other mineral oil products” became 8.4 percent more expensive, fruit, vegetables and potatoes with an average of 5.3 percent. With motor gasoline including diesel, the increase in the monthly comparison was 5.1 percent.
On the other hand, technical chemicals (minus 15.2 percent) or solid fuels (minus of 15 percent) became considerably cheaper. Metal and installation needs, old materials and residues and pets have also become a bit cheaper since December. The prices have developed very differently, depending on the product group.
Prices often adjusted at the start of the year
The somewhat stronger price increase of the monthly comparison is explained, among other things, that some companies do not constantly adjust their prices, but at the start of the year. Moreover, the CO₂ tax was increased at the beginning of January, the Austria statistics said in a broadcast on Friday.
Compared to December 2024, wholesale prices increased by 1.5 percent in January. The plus was 1.3 percent from January to February 2025. “After the Austrian wholesaler usually reduced its prices in 2024, we see an increase again at the beginning of 2025,” said the statistics of the Statistics Austria, Tobias Thomas. Inflation was 3.3 percent in January.
