The wine harvest in Austria has not been as bad as 2024 for 14 years. Late frost, drought and strong precipitation have led the winegrowers to have made less wine for a fifth – and we can drink less Austrian wine.
Last year the Austrian winemakers made 1.87 million hectoliters of wine, as Statistics reports Austria. That actually sounds a lot, but is a fifth less than in 2023 and the lowest value in 14 years.
Less white wine than red wine
The decrease of minus 22 percent was particularly strong to 1.29 million hectoliters in white wine. But even for red wine lovers, the news is not really better: in red wine, production fell by 13 percent to 578,600 hectoliters compared to 2023.
In general, the production volume of white and red wine remained 22 percent below the five -year average.
Especially small wine in the lower Austria
The production refused all the larger wine -large areas in Austria. The strongest damper put it in the lower Austria, where production was compared to 2023 with 1.18 million hectoliters almost a quarter lower. Styria registered a minus from 16 percent to 159,200 hectoliters, in Burgenland the harvest fell by 14 percent to 504,000 hectoliters.
