New sanction package – EU diplomats: now the shadow fleet is gone

Date:

The EU apparently agreed a new sanction package against Russia. The collection of measures must mainly focus on the Russian energy sector and shipping. The notorious shadow fleet of Russia must be placed.

In particular, these are those ships that already have to do with the existing sanctions – and are still involved in the transport of Russian oil. Companies in China that produce drones for Russia are apparently also the target. Various media report on this and referred to statements from top diplomats in Brussels and members of the German federal government.

The measures also include the prohibition of entry, assets and trade restrictions for more than 30 actors with connections with the Russian defense sector. According to reports, the new sanctions that have been sewn for weeks must be determined and formally decided next Tuesday during an EU meeting of the EU ministers. Then they could immediately take effect.

Study: Putin’s card card for
A few days ago, the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz endangered sharp sanctions such as Russia does not meet a strike-fire of 30 days. Moreover, the Ukrainian President Wolodyymyr Senskyj and other heads of state on direct negotiations with Vladimir Putin in Istanbul to end the war, while the Russian economy has structural weaknesses.

The background is the switch from a war economy and the effects of Western sanctions, said it in an analysis of the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (site) presented on Tuesday. The report was made as background material for the Minister of EU Finance. “The tax stimuli of the war economy kept the economy about water in the short term,” said the report.

“However, the dependence on opaque financing, a distorted distribution of resources and shrinking financial buffers make you in the long term. In contrast to the Kremlin, the time does not play for Russia.” Site director Torbjörn Becker expressed doubts about the reliability of Russian economic data before the press. If inflation is really at nine to ten percent, why has the central bank set an important interest rate of 21 percent, he asked. “If our central banks were to do something like that, they would get off their work the next day.”

Kremlin is confident
Putin was recently confident in relation to the Russian market. An apology from Western investors is not enough to return to Russia, he said. The statement bears witness to the fact that he will soon expect the end of the sanctions.

Since the start of the war in February 2022, the EU has imposed 16 sanctions packages against Russia, aimed at the most important sources of income such as oil and natural gas. The US, Canada, Great Britain, Japan and other countries have also introduced punitive measures. These are intended to maintain the ability of Russia to maintain its aggression war against Ukraine.
