Budget on pump? – Net Payers Austria threaten higher EU contributions

Date:

The net payers Austria and Sweden are confronted with considerably higher EU contributions. According to the last budget report, the Austrian EU contribution of 2.9 billion euros in the previous year will increase to 4.4 billion euros in 2027.

The European Minister Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) spoke for an “economic and smart use” of the tax money. “Austria has a strong idea that we do not want to accept extra joint debts,” she said after a meeting with her Swedish counterpart Jessica Roscrantz in Vienna. Rosencrantz referred to the Corona Rapor (yard), which was 750 billion euros, which was funded by loans from the EU committee and must be repaid for 30 years from 2028.

In the future, the EU should concentrate on migration, safety and competitiveness, Plakolm said. These are the points of attention that the citizens had expected. Despite the approaching higher EU contributions, the minister pointed out: “We get ten euros back for every euro we invest.” Among other things, she quoted examples of cross-border cooperation and EU support services.

Budget consultations soon
“Sweden and Austria stand like they, they take responsibility for the money from taxpayers so that every euro is used wisely,” said Roscrantz. The EU politicians will soon advise on the Multi annual budget from 2028. Already in the budget negotiations 2020, the governments of Sweden and Austria together with the Danish and Dutchmen contracted.

“If you want a strong Europe, you also have to be ready to strengthen it financially and also to take out common loans in the form of Eurobonds in times of crisis. Only in this way does Europe continue to act in exceptional situations and to act crisis,” said the Spö-EU MP Evelyn Regner and Andreas Schieder on Wednesday. Eurobonds are international bonds of medium and longer term that are issued in a currency that is not the at home of the issue.

Greens Criticize Placolm
The Green EU delegation manager Thomas Waitz criticized Plakolm’s statements. “For further development, we need every euro for a strong joint economic development, defense, agricultural and environmental policy. Worldwide crises need modern solutions and funds,” he said.
